Allahabad Public Library was opened as a memorial to the friendship of
Lord Thornhill, the Commissioner of Allahabad and Mr, Mayne,
the Collector. It is also called the 'Thornhill and Mayne
Memorial'. It was designed by R. Roskell Bayne. The Public
Library is an outstanding model of Gothic style of structural design. In
1879, the Public library was shifted to the present premises at Alfred
Park. It has about 75,000 books, besides a treasure trove of manuscripts
