A trip to Allahabad would be incomplete without visiting
Allahabad Museum. The museum is situated nearby the Chandra Shekar
Azad Park. Allahabad Museum was properly inaugurated in 1947 by
India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The
Allahabad museum has separate galleries 18 of them dedicated and devoted
to archaeological findings, natural history exhibits and Art gallery and
terracotta artifacts. The things on view include primitive and Indus
Valley antiquities, stone sculpture, terracotta, bronzes, seals, beads,
coins, inscriptions, miniature paintings, Buddhist thanks,
textiles. Nearly 400 sculptures generally classified sect wise
starting with the various categories of brahmanical gods followed
by deities of the Buddha and Jain pantheon and terminating with secular
and miscellaneous themes including architectural members have also been
included. The terracotta collection is one of the major in India and
dates from the Indus Valley onwards. There are a number of toys like
clay carts, animals and birds. There are ancient times from renowned
schools of sculpture like Gandhara, Mathura, Kausambhi
and Sarnath as well as important archaeological discoveries from
Bharhut, Bhita, Kausambhi and Jhusi. |
