Essentially an animal fair, it provides an opportunity to participate in some of the local sports.
This eight days fair held every year during the month of Jan-Feb, is popularly known as the Cattle fair and is the second largest in Rajasthan. Nagaur Town is the most picturesque of Rajput townships.
Nagaur is a sea of animals, trading over 70,000 bullocks, camels and horses every year. The bullocks are known for their fleetness. Not only are the animals lavishly decorated, even their owners flaunt wearing colorful turbans and long moustaches.
Sports like tug-of-war, camel races, bullock races and cock fights; jugglers; puppeteers, story-tellers; and exciting campfire evenings are held to entertain the tourists. Folk music of the Jodhpur variation echoes the tranquil desert sand. Nagaur is well connected to the major cities by road and rail. Nearest airport is Jodhpur, some 135kms away.
The fair is renowned for trading in cows, bullocks, camels and horses. Their owners are seen wearing colorful turbans and flaunting long moustaches. The bullocks of Nagaur are renowned for their fitness and attract a big number of buyers. Both the owners and buyers bargain to their heart's content until they decide upon a price.
A variety of games are organized during this four-day festival. Tug-of-war, camel races, cock fights etc. provide entertainment to the tourists and visitors. As the sun goes down, a joyous atmosphere is created by the folk musicians, whose voices echo far and wide across the tranquil desert sand.
HOW TO GET THERE
Air : Nagaur can be reached from Jaipur (293-km), Jodhpur (135-km) and Udaipur (400-km), which are on the domestic airlines route that links Delhi to Mumbai.
Rail : Most of Rajasthan is accessible by a network rail services. An excellent conncetion to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, from Delhi is the Pink City Express (5 hrs). Other places too are linked by passenger and express trains. Some other important train connections are: Ranakpur Express (Bikaner-Nagaur-Ratangarh); 4893 Mail (Marwar-Nagaur-Merta Road Junction).
Road : Rajasthan State Roadways coaches link most tourist places and business centres in and around the state. Chauffer-driven air-conditioned can be hired through the State Tourist Offices and other approved operators.
