Needlework
Crochet
and Embroidery are the traditional crafts of Goa. These arts, involving
needlework, was introduced in this region by the former colonial rulers,
the Portuguese. It's with the fabric preparation that Sandoval actually
begins--spinning, dying, and weaving wool into the sabanilla, or
background canvas. It is a custom among the Hindu and Christian
community of Goa, to display in front of the guests the fine embroidery
and crochet work of the newly wed bride. Notable items exhibiting the
fine needlework include curtains, table cloths, children and ladies
garments, pillow, bed spreads, cushion covers and flowers woven with
lace. |
